ZEW Monthly April 2024 with a Focus on Alumi
ZEW wouldn't be the same without its alumni. That's why we dedicate the April edition of the ZEW Monthly to our Alumni Network and its over 600 members.

Discover in the testimonials of our alumni how ZEW has shaped their careers. Watch video interviews with former colleagues and join us in reminiscing about the 2024 Alumni Day. In the ZEW Podcast, alumnus Dr. Timo Reister, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board at FUCHS SE, describes, among other things, how he continues to benefit from his experiences during his doctoral studies at ZEW and why he remains connected to the institute to this day.

ALUMNI MEETUP 2024
↗ A JOYFUL REUNION

On 23 February 2024, dozens of alumni came together at ZEW Mannheim for the annual alumni gathering, an occasion marked by joy. This year’s Alumni Day was all about exchange: with each research and service unit holding its own individual meeting. Former ZEW employees had the chance not only to participate in an expert discussion or two, but also to share their anecdotes from the “good old days.”

BUREAUCRACY MORE CRITICIZED THAN DEBT BRAKE

Despite the current strained budget situation, financial market experts surveyed by ZEW Mannheim do not consider the constitutional debt brake to be the biggest obstacle to investment in Germany. Instead, they attribute the lack of public investment to cumbersome bureaucratic processes and high social and personnel costs. This is the result of the special question included in the ZEW Financial Markets Survey of February 2024, in which 173 financial market experts participated.

MORE HIGH-STAR RATINGS IN PRODUCT REVIEWS

In recent years, the number of stars for products in online shop reviews has seen an upward trend, even as the quality of these products, as indicated by accompanying review texts, has remained unchanged. Consequently, there has been an inflation in the stars awarded. This is the result of a study conducted by researchers from ZEW Mannheim and Stanford University, who analysed over five million online product reviews and compared the content of the text reviews with their corresponding star ratings.

REAL WAGE LOSSES PUSH EMPLOYMENT TO RECORD HIGH IN 2023

Throughout 2023, approximately 45.9 million people in Germany were in employment, the Federal Statistical Office reported in its first 2024 press release, a significant increase on the 45.6 million employed the previous year. This figure is unprecedented in Germany and somewhat surprising given the sluggish economy. Experience indicates that due to technological progress, gross domestic product (GDP) must increase by one per cent to maintain the same level of employment. In 2022 and 2023, however, GDP grew only by 0.5 per cent per year, which is why employment should have fallen.
